Mr Barry Tweddle – HLTA Science at The Cooper School

Term of office : 4 Years from 10/07/2018

Resources Committee

Barry is a Support Staff representative for The Cooper School.

Having spent over a decade developing a career in retail management, working for large DIY., food and computing chains, I found myself facing redundancy.

I saw this as an opportunity to reconsider the direction I was heading and decided to follow my passion of working with young people. From the age of 13 I have been in the Air Training Corps, working through the ranks until I was leading a squadron and later, regional level sport.

The opportunity arose in 2014 to apply to work as a Cover Supervisor which is an enormously interesting and challenging job, being constantly on the move and always adapting. More importantly this job enabled me to really view some of the challenges some of our students face on a daily basis.

Although I found this job rewarding, I decided I wanted to be able to have more of an impact on teaching and learning within in a department and am now a very active HLTA in Science with a specific interest in supporting students with additional needs to access the curriculum and the examinations with greater independence.

All the skills and experiences from my earlier career have enabled me to further the intervention and support within the Science department. I applied for a role on the Governing Body to enable me to develop a clear picture and offer these skills and experiences to the Academy as a whole.
